Who am I?

I am an interior architect, designer and maker based in Helsinki. My practice moves between art, design, interior architecture and exhibition spaces — often somewhere in between these disciplines rather than within the boundaries of one.

I graduated with a Master’s degree from Aalto University School of Arts, Design and Architecture in 2023, majoring in Interior Architecture and minoring in Contemporary Design. Today, alongside my own practice, I teach arts and crafts to secondary-level artisan students. Teaching has become an important part of how I think and work: sharing knowledge, learning through making and seeing things from different perspectives continuously feed into my own practice.

I am drawn to materials, especially wood and ceramics, and to the process of working with them by hand. I enjoy the moment when an idea begins to take a physical form — when the material starts to influence the design rather than simply follow it. Recently, exhibition architecture has become an increasingly important part of my work, alongside my own design and art projects.

In 2022, I co-founded Studio Bom with two friends. What started as a shared studio and a desire to create a space for collaboration has grown into a creative community of nine professional artists and designers. For me, Studio Bom represents the importance of working together, exchanging ideas and making room for unexpected encounters. It is a place where different practices can meet, overlap and evolve.

In 2024, I founded the design duo Jalkanen & Keski-Pomppu with my friend and designer Päivi Keski-Pomppu. Together, we work at the intersection of art, design and architecture, creating objects and sculptures as well as furniture and interiors. Our approach is strongly material-driven and hands-on. We believe that the act of making is not simply a way of producing something, but a way of thinking — and that some of the most interesting ideas emerge through the process itself.

My own way of seeing the world is deeply rooted in North Savo, in northeastern Finland, and in the forests surrounding my grandmother’s home. Those landscapes, memories and forms of making have stayed with me. They appear in my work not necessarily as literal references, but as a sense of materiality, continuity and connection to something older.

I am interested in the life of objects — where they come from, what they carry with them and what they might become over time. I believe in sustainable aesthetics, in the value of craftsmanship and in creating things that are made to be lived with, cared for and passed on.

For me, design is a way of exploring the relationship between material, space, people and time. It is about making, questioning and finding new connections — while keeping one foot firmly in the past and the other in what is yet to come.
